Commission, tax, and even fees — there are so many things you need to know before signing up with a talent agency.
Hunter Talent represents actors, models, creatives, and influencers aged 18 years and over.
We’re dedicated to unearthing the brightest talent and matching them with the best opportunities. Whether you’re an actor or a model, a creative or an influencer, you want to work with Australia’s leading brands, right? Well, we can help with that. With decades of experience in the industry, our agents have the contacts to get your portfolio in front of the right people.
We’re also a sister agency to Australia’s longest-running child talent agency, Bubblegum Casting, which specialises in child talent.
Yes and no. We represent actors, models, creatives, and influencers aged 18 and over.
We love people of all ages, shapes, sizes, and cultural backgrounds.
If you have talent, the will to succeed, and a solid work ethic, then you could be a good fit for Hunter Talent.
If you think this industry is good for a quick buck, then sorry, but we probably won’t be able to work together.
Call us old-fashioned, but we like to meet before we sign anyone to our books.
You can fill out our online application form, and we’ll be in touch if we think you might be a good fit for the agency.
Hunter Talent has helped many of Australia’s leading brands and production companies find the right talent for their projects.
You can check out our list of clients right here. You should recognize a name or two 🙂
That’s the million-dollar question right there.
The truth is that we have no idea, as it all depends on your suitability to a role and a client’s requirements.
One thing we are sure of is that we’ll promote the hell out of you.
If a suitable brief comes in, we’ll make damn sure the right people see your portfolio.
The rest is up to you.
We’re a boutique agency, which means that we place quality over quantity in everything we do.
We have about 300 super-talented folk on our books, and we can vouch for the professionalism of each and every one. We can probably even tell you how they all like their coffee too.
That’s a definite no.
Seriously, when two agencies put you forward for the same role, it looks super unprofessional for both you and the agencies involved. Don’t do this thinking you’ll get more work, because it could hurt your career.
All new applications are reviewed by the Hunter Talent team, who then decide whether an interview or meetup is needed. If successful, the applicant will be asked to submit a self-tape monologue or introduction. All applicants who we feel might be a good fit for the agency will then go through an interview before signing with Hunter Talent.
Yes, we have a commission agreement that you sign when you join the agency. This is a legally binding document and it’s there to protect everyone involved (that means you too).
The commission agreement is usually for a period of twelve months, as this gives us plenty of time to put your forward for suitable opportunities.
The commission agreement can be terminated at any time by mutual consent, because after all, sometimes things just don’t work out.
No, we do not charge fees to join the agency. However, we do require you to pay for portal subscriptions that are critical casting tools for the entertainment industry.
We also require you to have high-quality, professional headshots. If you don’t already have headshots, we can organise a shoot with one of our amazing in-house photographers for a reasonable fee.
This depends on the job in question, but our commission ranges from 10-20%.
Oh, yeah! Nothing like paying less tax, right?
Any payment made for casting portals and headshots are tax deductible if you make enough money to cross the tax threshold.
We’re going to stop right there though. We’re not tax consultants, and we think you really should speak to someone who knows more about tax laws and finances.
The first step is to develop a skill set, and one thing you can do to develop your skills in acting would be achieved greatly by going through acting classes! There are monologue classes, theatre acting classes, on-camera classes, voice acting classes, and a whole lot of classes that you are very welcome to join in!
Going through one of them could greatly develop your confidence and give you the skills that would help you nail acting. There are no concrete steps that one has to take in becoming an actor but we’ve thought of some tips that would help you kickstart your career, and wrote a whole blog about “How to Become an Actor” here.
At present, we only represent talents who are located in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Perth. Ideally, talents will live within commuting distance of each city’s central business district, as this makes it easier to attend auditions and work assignments.
No, agency can offer that kind of guarantee and any agency that make such an offer is probably not on the level. How much work you book depends on many factors that are beyond our control not least of which is the fact that it is the client who decides to book the talent–we have no input in the final decison-making process. All we do is recommend suitable talent and assist with auditions, guiding and helping throughout the process.
Yes, you certainly can. Just make sure your own portal has been retired from your previous agency (if applicable), so we can send through an invite for you to link to ours.
No, Hunter Talent does not have a referral program, although we are more than happy to speak with new talents based on a client’s recommendation.
No, any work visa and work permit processing will be handled by the client as by law, they are considered your employer for the duration of the job. However, we are always happy to help out and point you in the right direction. Chances are, we’ve handled a similar situation in the past and we’ll have an idea of what you need to do.
Hunter Talent will gladly help you arrange a headshot session with a photographer that we work extensively with, however, we do not provide this service in-house. While we do not run classes, we do provide free resources in our ‘Articles’ and ‘Guides’ sections on the website.
No, this type of insurance is the sole responsibility of the talent. We do not offer any kinds of insurance policies.
Hunter Talent provides extensive free resources in our ‘Articles’ and ‘Guides’ sections of our website. These cover all the aspects of working in the industry. From time to time, we may host or be involved in a live event. If this is the case, all talents on our books will be informed and invited to join.
Yes, Hunter Talent offers a wide range of free resources in our ‘Articles’ and ‘Guides’ sections on our website. Our agents are also more than happy to offer guidance to talents who may need a little help along their career path.
You are allowed to self-submit as long as the job is not through another agency. It’s also important that you inform us so we can ensure that there are no duplicate submissions, or conflict of interest. Remember, as your representative, Hunter Talent can negotiate a fair rate of pay and ensure that your rights are protected.
No, Hunter Talent only represents actors and talent who are aged 18 or older. Our sister agency, Bubblegum Casting, represents children from babies right up to age 17. The legal requirements for working with minors can be found on each state government’s website.
There is no need to call Hunter Talent for updates with regards to potential bookings. We will always contact you if there is any news or if we need any additional information for a client. Trust us, we won’t forget about you!
Once you have made your application, Hunter Talent will contact to let you know if we feel that we are a good fit for each other. We always reply to applications, so don’t worry, you will certainly get a response.
Hunter Talent is proud to represent people from a diverse range of backgrounds. The diversity of our talents is one of the main attractions for many of our clients. So, regardless of your ethnicity or cultural background, if you want to work in the entertainment industry, we’d love to hear from you.
As with most agencies, the majority of our communications with clients is handled over the phone or via email. We willl meet clients from time to time at auditions, castings, or industry events, but generally speaking, the actual business of representation is mostly handled online.
Hunter Talent is a professional talent agency and, as such, we have very strict confidentiality protocols in place. We always strive to offer the very best in service to both our talents and our clients so if any potential conflict of interest arises, we will ensure that the client and talent are made aware of the situation before attempting to find a resolution. However, we do this in such a way as to always protect the privacy and rights of both client and talents.
Hunter Talent will help you negotiate a fair rate of pay for every job that you book. This takes into account your expenses, your time on the job, and the industry standard rate of pay for that specific type of work. We will also ensure that your legal rights as a talent are upheld. Our decades of experience in the industry means that we’re ideally suited to getting the best rates and contracts for our talents.
Any disputes between talents and the agency will be dealt with in the strictest confidence and with the rights of both the agency and talent in mind. To be honest, disputes very rarely happen, and we’d like to keep it that way, so we always carry out our work with the utmost professionalism.
Hunter Talent will invoice the client directly for any work that you undertake. This is why it’s incredibly important that you keep a record of the hours you work on assignment and any additional work that you did that may not have been in the job brief. Once the client pays the invoice, we will take our commission and pay you immediately. Please note that client payments can take up to 90 days from the date of invoice. If the work has been completed and payment has not been received within the timeframe please contact our Accounts Department.
This is perfectly normal as many up-and-coming actors and models will have another job to pay the bills. All the talent must do is let us know if there are specific times that they absolutely cannot be available for work and auditions, and we will note this on their profile. It’s worth noting that for people that want a full-time career in the entertainment industry, it may be necessary to make some sacrifices.
The only time we can allow for multiple agency representation is if you are signed with another agency that is not in direct competition with us for briefs. For example – you are represented by another agency for modelling only and with us (Hunter Talent) for acting only, or vice versa. We will not be able to represent you if you are already represented across BOTH of these categories by another agency.
At Hunter Talent, we believe that everyone should have an equal opportunity to work in the industry. With this in mind, we give everyone who applies to join us the same consideration regardeless of their history. However, once a talent joins the agency, they will need to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. Any misconduct or rudeness to clients may result in a termination of representation.
If a talent wants to move to a different location where Hunter Talent does not operate, we’ll be only too happy to help the talent in any way that we can, even if this means helping them find a new agency. But we’re growing fast, so the chances are we may cover most of Australia in the not too distant future!
Hunter Talent provides extensive advice and guidance on taking your first steps in the industry in our ‘Articles’ and Guides’ sections on our website. This includes advice on creating portfolios and self-tapes. We are also more than happy to recommend local photographers with industry experience in taking headshots, etc.
Once we represent you, Hunter Talent will search for suitable opportunities and promote your talents to our extensive network of industry contacts. We will also match you with any briefs that come through the agency that we feel you are a good fit for. From time to time, we will showcase our talents to casting directors and clients just to keep your profile fresh in their minds.
You initial contract will last for 12 months and will continue on a rolling basis until you or the agency opt to terminate the agreement.
We are the only agency in the nation that has a system that alerts you of what jobs and clients we are presenting you for in real time. If you are shortlisted or if we need any additional information for a client, we will be in touch via call, SMS, and email.
If you don’t already have headshots and portals, we can organize this for you at a cost as we do not cover set-up fees for our talents, if you already have existing ones, let us know so we can review and send for approval and waive the fees accordingly.
Yes and no. We don’t set any targets for our talents as we understand that it’s impossible to determine how busy the industry will be from month to month. However, we do ask that all our talents try their best at all times and are open to opportunities. If you consistently turn down auditions or opportunities that we think you are a good fit for, then we’ll need to have a chat with you about your ambitions. After all, your success is our primary goal.
If a client is interested in booking you for work, either based on our recommendation or your talent portals, they will contact Hunter Talent directly. If an audition is required, we will contact you with the details. If there is no need for an audition, we will negotiate a fair rate of pay for your time and then get in touch with you to let you know the good news and ensure that you are willing to accept the job.
Hunter Talent wants you to succeed in your career, and to do that takes focus and dedication. We’re in it for the long haul and hope that you are too. That’s why we have a very straightforward renewal process, whereby by we send you a reminder to update your information on portals and professional headshots as needed. It’s as simple as that!
If at any point you decide to end your relationship with Hunter Talent, all you need to do is send through an official email request and let us know. We’ll be very sad to see you go, but of course, we’ll understand and wish you the best for the future.
Hunter Talent takes a standard 10 – 20% commission for most booked work. This is the industry standard rate and covers administration and promotion costs for your representation throughout the year.
At Hunter Talent, we represent actors, models, creatives, influencers and so much more. Please feel free to reach out and ask us about representation if you’re not sure which category you fall into.
